When do you invest in a new PC ? Now that Windows 11 is available, some old computers cannot run it. Do you in such cases invest in a better hardware ?

Windows 11 is still a bit too untested, IMO, I'd give it time to mature a bit before worrying about upgrading to it. I prefer Linux, personally, but I understand Windows is preferred by the vast majority, and that's perfectly fine. I'd look to upgrade my PC typically every 8-ish years, I also love to build my own, because I feel you get better bang for your buck, but even off the shelf, you should be good for at least 5 years before upgrades.

Probably every 8 or 9 years.

How do you do that ?
Most tech gets outdated easily these days. In way, both of you have a point. Major Windows versions last at least that long.

Old computers may not need replacement if a tune up program is bought and anti-virus and anti-malware is installed. Well, I suppose, as with the human body or a car, things depends on how the computer was treated. Does anyone know of a well running computer - that was at least moderately used - that works perfect even today?

They just have updates and we don't change unless absolutely necessary. A lot in landfills as it is. A low percentage doesn't get recycled. That's what we think of.

I feel that Microsoft is trying to blackmail people in to upgrading, I’ve only had my PC for a year and plan to get another 4 years out of it before I consider to upgrade.

I got a new PC recently for the first time since 2013. I try to keep my electronics as long as they are still meeting my needs.

I tried Windows 11 on my existing PC and everything was fine until I needed to print something. No matter what I do, the printer just does not connect AT ALL. So, I am downgrading (today) from 11 to 10. I talk more about what I think of 11 here: techblogger.space/windows-11-the-good-the-bad/Jist is I don't like it at all and can't wait to go back to 10. I hope I can stick with 10 until I replace my PC with a MacBook Pro in a few years.

Windows 11 is not ready yet. There are a few bugs that need attention. Especially when we are using AMD.

From what I've seen, Win11 is going to have the same problems that many MS products do out of the box - namely compatibility issues.
I'm looking for a hardware platform to evaluate it on, so if anyone has a spare computer to sell, please drop me a line.

I currently have an Acer laptop that I've used for the last 3 years. However, it still runs well and I have the newest Windows update. Unfortunately, I do not have as much space on my device as I would like, and I have deleted several things here and there before downloading something new. In conclusion, I will probably end up purchasing a new laptop in the near future.

I haven't come across the issue yet. I actually really like Windows 11.
I typically don't change equipment until they become obsolete. I think the average I wait 6-7 years before considering getting a new computer.

You can post here and I'll see it, or follow the link in my signature. I would post more information about my business, but I'd rather not break any rules concerning commercial advertisement on HOST.

I can properly choose the compenents for my PC as I'm pretty keen on tech and experienced with it. And I get a new PC when the one I have cannot keep up with my needs - work, gaming, streaming & video rendering, etc. It usually takes 6-8 years to start seeing performance struggles.

Normally, I use a computer until it starts giving me a headache, for instance, it is very slow. I don't update my computer in order to adjust to the new version of the software I am using. My computer runs on Windows 10 and it does not support Windows 11.

I bought a new one about 18 months ago. First time I ever bought one that wasn't built from the ground up.

Unless hardware is really crying. I don't see the reason to change the PC. I feel like hardware and also the change in few spec is necessary every 3 to 4 years. So one has to consider that part as well.

I am looking to upgrade one PC in this month for keeping in my another home so work can be completed without problem. I am not interested to buy a new PC because of no use for me at this stage.
I buy a new PC when I need new software for installation, unless I keep the old ones only. I am now on Windows 7 but it is poor performance in anything like running programs.

That is one of the ways that they make money. Those upgrades cost some dollars and they need it for the company to keep functioning.
